If you haven’t read The Kiss Quotient by Helen Hoang for your hot summer reading list, fear not. Winter is almost here and you’ll need something steamy to warm you.

Like many Aspergers, Hoang has developed a few techniques to manage her traits, including how to handle to massive publicity that comes with being a best-seller.

Many of those on the spectrum have or had creative ways of either blending in with neurotypicals and Hoang is no exception. Diagnosed at 34 years old, some of her tricks started long before she even knew what Asperger’s was.

In childhood, for example, she had difficulty making realistic expressions, a trait not uncommon for some Aspergers. She started practicing in the mirror to look more natural.

Social interactions may make Aspergers uncomfortable or awkward, especially if there are large crowds. Hoang does not do any in-person book signings or appearances to lessen this sensation. This may also avoid the issue of making appropriate eye contact, something she also has difficulty with.

One of the most interesting techniques is what may be considered stimming–an act done to calm the nerves, soothe or relax. Hoang has a basket full of oversized Rubik’s cubes, many of which have varying textures on the surface. Whether it’s during an interview or creating the next hot love scene, Hoang can be frequently seen toying with one to calm her senses.

Now you have a few tips for managing Asperger’s. For love tips, you’ll have to read Hoang’s book.
