If you follow this blog, you are already familiar with its commentary on Big Bang Theory‘s Sheldon Cooper’s portrayal of Asperger’s syndrome.
You may be surprised to learn there are many characters that have either been officially diagnosed on screen or whose characteristics strongly point to it.
Jerry “Hands” Espenson is a character that appeared in 50 episodes of Boston Legal. He is officially diagnosed and there are several mannerism seen on the drama that illustrate his traits. He was given a wooden stick to place in his mouth during intense moments to ease his tensions. This may be similar to stimming, what some autistics do to comfort or relax themselves. Other characteristics include being bold to the point of what some see as arrogance. But hey, he’s a lawyer–when are they ever seen as humble?
More characters on prominent television shows include Max Braverman from Parenthood.
While many of the characters from Ranker are from U.S. television shows, there are British stars as well. Maurice Moss is a computer programmer on the UK show the IT Crowd. He is noted for his ability to “embrace his weird,” among other things. An interest in technology is often found among those on the spectrum.
Those with Asperger’s are described as having difficulty socializing or recognizing social cues, interests that are narrow in scope, pedantic speech, odd mannerisms and the desire for order and regularly scheduled activities. These traits may be more pronounced in childhood, waning in adulthood, as they become less awkward and transition into professional life.
Do any of your favorite TV characters embrace these characteristics, along with their weirdness?
