Woman’s Search For Husband’s Asperger Diagnosis Leaves Relief, More Questions

How can you be married to a man for 15 years and not know he has Asperger’s?
Because literally no one knows anything about the issue! And if they do, they aren’t sure exactly how to remedy it.
One woman’s essay on how she came to realize her husband’s condition was full of so many of the classic signs, she and her hubby could have been subjects for the Stuff Aspergers Like book!
Some of his traits included:
1. Lack of eye contact
2. Not quick to show affection
3. Lots of time discussing the special interest
4. Not recognizing other people are bored from the special interest
5. Being really into his special interests
“We’d talk on the phone for hours, or rather. he’d talk for hours. He could spend an eternity chatting about books and politics and the movie Blade Runner. I liked his enthusiasm. ‘Who cares if I never got a word in edgewise? He’s just passionate’, I thought.”
Now comes the relief. But what about the treatment?
The diagnosis was a relief, but the lack of guidance that followed it was troubling.
“You can elevate a wound, ice a sprain. What do you do for Aspergers? My husband is freakishly smart, high-functioning with a well-respected job, insanely good work ethic, and has me, a woman who loves him, even when it’s difficult. It’s not like he has to be fixed, which is good, because you can’t fix Asperger Syndrome.”
Not to mention that many aren’t willing to.
Is there a happy ending to this saga?
