English singer Gary Numan says being an Asperger has more advantages than disadvantages.

Apparently, his combination of social quirks are a good fit for his position of being in bands that have made hits since the ’80s, as he explained to a reporter who asked if he ever encountered any difficulties.

“I’ve never needed to convince people about anything to do with my life, in any way, because I have Asperger’s,” said Numan in an interview. “Having Asperger’s has been a positive thing for me, not negative. I’m not good in social situations and my emotional reactions to certain things are a bit wayward at times, but that seems like a small price to pay for the advantages it brings.”

An interesting aspect of Numan’s diagnoses is that is was done by his wife. She showed him several articles on the topic and encouraged him to take a few online self-diagnosis.

Read any Rolling Stone or Billboard interview featuring a rock star and you’ll learn quickly that musicians can be elusive and asocial creatures without needing any diagnosis. We can attribute some of his personality to something other than fame.

“Polite conversation has never been one of my strong points,” he said in an interview with The Guardian. “Just recently I actually found out that I’d got a mild form of Asperger’s syndrome which basically means I have trouble interacting with people. For years, I couldn’t understand why people thought I was arrogant, but now it all makes more sense.”
