The Good Men Project has an interesting article on tips to combat sensory sensitivity. The site, which features everything from politics to family issues sounds incredibly progressive just from its name. And now, a feature on how men of the world can develop a better understanding of Asperger’s from their children to themselves is perfectly befitting for the times.

In a sense, many of the tips for recognizing how to handle overload, are similar to tips for other types of issues, even for those that aren’t categorized as “different” or with a “condition.”

Wisdom such as “taking sensory breaks” or “set limits” is what everyone in the corporate, private-sector and any other industry should heed in the trend of 60-hour workweeks or leaving cellular phones on 24-7 to work when we’re not on the clock.

The idea of adjusting life to compensate for overload is one that is particularly interesting. If you can do it, take an extra day off just to prep for the big “sensory” event.

From Good Men Project:

“For example, I love the Foo Fighters and last year I was taken to their concert for my birthday. I knew the crowd and noise would be huge triggers so I planned absolutely nothing for the next day so I could spend time decompressing and letting my brain reset itself. I also knew I would want to leave a little early so I could avoid the massive crowd stampeding for the exits.”

Ah, and don’t forget those earplugs.

We all Dave Grohl, but not necessarily at 120 decibels.
