Aspergers on the stage in Ireland. Aspergers on the stage in the states.

This must be the season for Aspergers in the arts!

Dancing Lessons by Mark St. Germain takes a look at a professor with Asperger’s syndrome who requests the assistance of a temporary decommissioned Broadway star to teach him the moves she made before injuring her leg.

It is currently playing through mid-November at the Lesher Center for the Arts in the San Francisco Bay area, but it has made its way to other stages in the past.

One of the biggest traits illustrated in this work is Ever’s profession, a geosciences professor. From the Stuff Asperger People Like list of “stuff”:

“Many Asperger people obtain careers in academia. Often, the academic area of interest is something that was a special interest growing up. For this reason, becoming a professor is much like a “Revenge of the Asperger nerds,” experience.”

The Hartford Courant described the 2015 production at Hartford’s TheaterWorks as one for, “Romantics. Dancers. Those who welcome a better understanding of Asperger’s,” but not for, “those who are averse to romantic odd-couple pairings.” This could, potentially, and ironically, include many Aspergers.
