It all sounds so fun and educational.

A nice afternoon with the family with several guys here to entertain, make funny jokes and give a great lecture on autism.

Not so, says Asperger’s Are Us, a comedic troupe with their own HBO and Netflix series. With skits that highlight a politician’s sex scandal, don’t expect a family friendly environment with that PBS feeling.

Does this make some offended? Or add more to the humor?

Noah Britton and the rest of the group emphasize that they’re here to make people laugh with what they prefer to call an Asperger-type humor. What exactly is Asperger humor?

According to Stuff Asperger’s Like:

“There are many ways to describe Aspie humor—dry, sarcastic, weird. But lack of humor—they’re anything but.”

Asperger’s Are Us’ Noah Britton states that, “the whole reason it’s called Asperger’s Are Us is that we do Aspie-style comedy — a lot of quick word play, a lot of association within a lot of absurdism that ignores social convention. So if you’re into that stuff, and you’re highly verbal, you’ll probably like the show. And if you’re not into that stuff, then you know, please don’t come expecting some kind of educational or like relatable things, because that’s just not what we’re about.”

While education is not their intent, the idea behind their style of humor can still illustrate Asperger’s–whether these guys want it to or not. Many Aspergers are known for their ability to be extremely versed with language. That includes wordplay, flowing language, extravagant phrases, big words and complicated sentences that make some laugh because it could have been said in four words instead of taking 30.

That alone is a short, but valuable lesson you can pass along to whoever you choose to watch them with as they make fun of presidential scandals involving illegitimate children.

The aim of Asperger’s Are Us sounds valuable. There are many in the community who seem to always be on edge, looking for an outlet to be quick to complain or criticize because some part of autism media is not viewing the diagnoses as the condition it should be. Not letting people laugh at themselves or someone they know may make things more difficult than a diagnoses itself. If you know what Asperger’s is and the type of communication these individuals sometimes create, then give Asperger’s Are Us a try.
